SFY offers training for law enforcement on best practices for interacting with youth. We provide officers with grounding in developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, understanding and equitable practical strategies to use with youth.
We offer training for patrol officers, school resource offices, and officers likely to encounter youth in the course of their duties.
But that’s not all. SFY offers technical assistance to law enforcement agencies that seek to build officers’ understanding and skills with youth, partnerships with youth-serving organizations.
Got youth policies? Many agencies don’t.
SFY released 12 Model Law Enforcement Policies for Interactions with Youth to close ethe game. The policies include everything from investigatory stops to timing of Miranda warnings, and interrogation of youth. The policies are based on case law, best practices, consent decrees, and extensive research. Law enforcement agencies are invited to review, adopt and adapt the policies.
Services for Youth? There’s an App for that. Agencies can best serve youth and their families, in the moment, by being a bridge to community-based resources. SFY’s Youth Services App, which enables officers to share resource information, now has a new youth diversion feature.
What’s the best practice? SFY’s “how to” guides are written for law enforcement agencies and officers to bridge gaps, support new approaches and alternatives.
